At Painfree Densitry we offer our patients the latest treatment. One of the solutions we offer for gum disease is a gingivectomy. This is a simple gum surgery that can help remove infected gum. It is also used to reshape the gums.
What is a Gingivectomy?
A gingivectomy is a procedure performed to treat gum disease and it can also be used to change the height or width of a tooth. A dentist who is trained in periodontal surgery will remove the gum that has any issues. The surgery may be used to treat gum disease if it can’t be cured with antibiotics.
The procedure can be performed with a scalpel or laser. The tissue that is infected or excessive will be trimmed off. Then the remaining gums will be reattached with stiches. After the stitches, the area will be cleaned with a special rinse. You will be given local anaesthetic pain relief for the procedure. The goal of the procedure is to remove and/or reshape gum tissues to remove the pockets in between the gums and teeth.
When the gingivectomy has been completed a surgical dressing will be applied to the area and it will be left there for around a week. Antibacterial mouthwash can also be used to help the gums heal.
You will need check-ups after the procedure to ensure that the gums are healing properly. Your dentist will want to see you every three months and then it will be reduced to twice a year. Generally, patients can go back to their normal oral care routine in a month or less. The surgery may only cause minor discomfort and you can take medication such as ibuprofen if you experience any pain after the procedure. Swelling may also occur but this can be minimized with ice. You can use a reusable ice bag, wrap it in a towel and then apply it to the area. After a gingivectomy you should only east soft foods while your gums are healing. You should also only drink cool drinks. Your dentist will advise you on food, drink and other things that should be avoided.
