6 Healthy Habits to Maintain Healthy Teeth

Healthy teeth and gums are crucial to everyday living as they help us eat, drink, talk and smile. Good dental care is imperative to prevent cavities, toothache or gum disease.
Regular visits to your dentist or hygienist are recommended to make sure your teeth and gums are in perfect condition. Between visits, keeping a good dental routine up is a must. Fortunately, there are a few easy things you can do to make sure your dental routine is up to scratch.
1. Brush Your Teeth Twice a Day
Brushing your teeth twice a day is important to ensure your teeth and gums remain in excellent condition.
After a day of eating and drinking dangerous sticky bacteria can build up on your teeth which can turn into plaque. Excessive plaque leads to problems such as cavities further down the track. Brushing after you have eaten will help remove any bacteria build-up from your teeth or gums.
If you’re not sure how you should brush your teeth properly, ask your dentist for a proper demonstration.
2. Electric Toothbrush
Do you find it too hard to brush your teeth with a manual toothbrush?
Investing in an electric toothbrush will ensure your teeth are cleaned properly. Make sure you invest in a good toothpaste that contains fluoride. This will help strengthen tooth enamel and prevent decay.
3. Don’t forget to Floss
This is a step many people overlook. Flossing is just as important as brushing, if not more important. Flossing helps remove any debris and bacteria that is stuck between your teeth and even on the tooth surface.
The flossing technique is something most people get wrong so asking your dentist for a demonstration is very important.
4. Invest in a good rinse or mouthwash
Once you have brushed your teeth and flossed, follow up with a mouth rinse or wash.
Antibacterial rinses will help kill any remaining bacteria left in your mouth and a fluoride wash will help protect your tooth enamel. Your dentist will be able to recommend a bottle of mouthwash that is best suited for your needs. Most dentist will recommend you use your rinse or mouthwash once or twice a day.
5. Don’t Forget your Tongue
Most people completely neglect their tongue when it comes to their oral health routine. Your tongue is like a trap for bacteria, with food and drink particles getting trapped by crevasses in your tongue.
You can use your toothbrush to clean your tongue by sweeping the brush in forward motions up and down your tongue.
Alternately you can invest in a tongue scraper. Gently slide it and move it from the back to the front of your tongue to remove any food or grime. Make sure you are applying enough pressure so that the tongue scraper is effectively removing any grime.
6. Stay Away from Fizzy Drinks
Acidic and sugary fizzy drinks are bad for your teeth, it’s a fact everyone knows, but do you know why?
Every time you have a sugary drink the sugar latches onto your teeth. The bacteria that is usually in your mouth latches onto the sugar increases your mouth’s acidity. Over time the acid wears away your tooth enamel, leaving your teeth weak and susceptible to cavities.
Fizzy drinks are best avoided and replaced with water or milk, however, if you do have a fizzy drink make sure you drink it through a straw. Aim the straw over the back of your tongue, away from your teeth. Once you are finished, rinse your mouth out with water to remove any remaining sugar that is left in your mouth.
This rule also applies to sticky, sweet lollies and fruit juice. As they all contain high amounts of sugar that will get stuck in and around your teeth leading to dental problems.

It is recommended that you see your dentist every six months. Your dentist will have a thorough look at your teeth and your gums to make sure everything is nice and healthy. Any existing fillings or previous dental work will also be checked.
