Early interceptive orthodontics
Interceptive orthodontics is orthodontic treatment for young children. This treatment can begin at the early age of six or seven. Treatment is started at this age because the jaw and teeth are still developing and growing. In certain cases, this means that conditions are easier to fix. This applies to issues such as overcrowding.
What are the benefits of Early Interceptive Orthodontics?
The early intervention uses the growing jaw as an advantage. This is useful when the jaw and dental arches are not in the right place. Functional appliances can be used to fix these issues. Other treatments may be needed later but these should have a shorter treatment time. Treatment can also help the new permanent teeth grow and sit in the correct position which solves any issues that could arise in the future.
What Early Orthodontic treatments are available?
Braces – Braces have changed and have moved with the times, braces are now easier to fit and are more comfortable than ever. There are even colorful ones available instead of the metal look. Some discomfort may still occur but it can be solved with a pain reliever. Braces are a great way to straighten teeth.
Myobrace – Myobrace is an appliance that corrects orthodontic issues without the need for a brace. This treatment works best for children around six to twelve. It is a solution that can fix multiple dental issues. The treatment is removeable and stress free.
Expander – Expanders can be removable or fixed. These are used to widen the jaw so the teeth fit better together. Your dentist will discuss this solution with you if it is the best way to treat the orthodontic issue.
Early Orthodontic Tips for Home
Flossing – Flossing once a day at night will loosen food and plaque. If this is not removed it can become tartar. It also cleans the areas not reachable with a toothbrush.
Fluoride Rinsing – A fluoride rinse will keep teeth strong and healthy. So, after brushing have your child rinse with a fluoride rinse. This is an easy way to help look after the teeth early.
Swish Water – Before your child starts to brush their teeth instruct them to rinse with water. This will loosen any food that has stuck in the teeth during the day. Swishing water is great for children with braces as it can help to remove food stuck in the braces. Then brush the teeth as normal.
Dental Visits – It is very important that you take your child to the dentist every six months. The dentist will provide and check-up and a clean. These appointments will be preventive as the dentist can spot any issues early and it can ensure a problem is fixed quickly. You can also discuss ways to keep your child’s teeth healthy as well as discussing any concerns you might have.
