Gum disease

Most Australian adults will be affected by gum disease at some time during their life. If you experience bleeding gums when you brush or floss, swollen or reddened gums, or loose teeth, these may be signs that you have gum disease.

Gum disease is caused by the bacteria in plaque, which if not carefully removed with your at-home oral hygiene routine, can affect firstly your gums and teeth, and then your supporting jaw bone that secures your teeth. This more serious stage can result in teeth which are loose, falling out, or needing extraction.

The good news is that, if gum disease is detected early, it can be reversed with proper brushing and flossing, and help from the Painfree Dentistry Parramatta team. Regular checkups with your dentist allow us to treat gum disease in its early stage, known as gingivitis, before it progresses to the much more serious periodontitis.
