Early gum disease, or gingivitis, is the easiest phase to treat. Symptoms include swollen, red or tender gums that bleed when you brush, recurring bad breath or a bad taste in your mouth, or gums which are pulling away from your teeth.
Gingivitis is an inflammation of your gums, caused when plaque isn’t thoroughly removed by brushing and flossing. This plaque buildup then produces bacteria which will inflame your gum tissue, eventually causing pockets to form between your teeth and gums, where more plaque and bacteria will accumulate. In turn, these bacteria will cause the more serious condition of periodontitis if left untreated.
To avoid or treat gingivitis, it’s important that you carefully brush your teeth twice each day with a soft, small-headed toothbrush. Pay special attention to your gum line, where the gum meets the tooth, to ensure the gum tissue and supporting structures remain healthy. Flossing at least once a day between your teeth will also help removal potentially damaging plaque.
And of course, regular professional cleanings with Painfree Dentistry are essential in avoiding gingivitis. Ensure you visit your Parramatta dentist at least twice a year, so that we can thoroughly remove all built up plaque and tartar from your teeth and guard against the onset of gingivitis.
