What is a Gum Lift?
Your gums can affect the way your smile looks. One of the most common cosmetic issues is called a gummy smile. A gummy smile occurs when you have too much gum for your smile. If this is an issue that affects you, your dentist may recommend a gum lift. A gum lift will change the appearance of your gums. You can have straight, white and beautiful teeth but they don’t look their best because of your gums. A gum lift can help you achieve the smile you have always wanted.
Who is a Gum Lift for?
A gum lift can help patients with a gummy smile where there is excess gum and for patients who have uneven gums. The lift will recontour the gum tissue so the gum is the right shape and is the right proportion for your face and smile.
The Gum Lift Procedure
A gum lift will be performed with laser technology. This means that removal and reshape of the gums is faster and more efficient than with the more traditional method of scalpels and surgical tools. Not only does this make the procedure easier for both the dentist and patient but it also makes recovery time faster. There are no stitches with this procedure so treatment is quick and not painful.
Local anaesthesia will be used to numb the gums. If you have dental anxiety the pain relief method may be different. You should discuss this with your dentist. The laser will then be used on the excess gum tissue. It reshapes the gum and removes any tissue and will seal the blood vessels. It is not a long procedure and only takes around half an hour.
After the Gum Lift
Recovery time after a gum lift is minimal. Every patient is different but many patients can get back to their normal routine and return to work the day after surgery. Your gums may feel sensitive for a few days after the surgery. To help with sensitivity you can rinse your mouth with salt water, use warm water. Over the counter medications can also help with any discomfort, should you experience any. You can eat and drink after surgery but you should avoid and spicy, hot or cold foods. You can still brush and floss daily. You should floss very gently however. Your dentist will discuss any changes to your daily oral hygiene routine if any is required. Your gums will heal after a week. If you have any concerns about your symptoms or if you have any swelling or bleeding contact us straight away.
